Heartland fans, it seems, are forever chasing Amy Fleming. They follow her — or rather, the actress who plays her, Amber Marshall — to the Calgary Stampede, on TV as she hosts the Canadian Country Music Association Awards and even online (Marshall’s official Twitter account now has 35,500 followers).
But adjusting to Amy’s new grooming habits this season has been a learning curve for the London, Ont., native — and her fans are quick to notice.
“This year, as part of the changes for my character, they wanted me to have beautiful nails and that’s something I have never ever had.
But Paris has a way of putting some glamour in a girl’s gait, and she struggles to adjust to life back at home.
“Being in Europe for four or five months has changed her,” says Marshall of her Heartland character.
“She might not realize it at first, and might want to carry on with life as she knew it, yet everyone around her has grown and so has she.” Playing Amy for almost a decade — practical, outdoorsy, animal-focused — has been as comfortable for Marshall as slipping into a pair of faded Levi’s.
In real life, the 26-year-old is a former veterinary assistant who lives on a ranch outside Calgary with her husband, photographer Shawn Turner, and assorted four-legged friends.
For my wedding, I didn’t even paint my nails or even carve the dirt out from underneath them,” she says.
“So I’ve been going and getting my nails done, and the fans notice instantly. ’ ” What remains the same, though, is Marshall’s passion for animals. But prior to him, my family had cats and dogs, so I was always around them.
She slicks on some lipstick, brushes her cheeks with rouge, affixes an earring and descends a staircase, Mae West style, in a slinky white dress.
